Beginner Stick® Seminar and Teacher Training Course

Nov 4-5, Charlottesville, Virginia, at the Music Resource Center
with a Sunday evening concert at Gravity Lounge

What's this all about?
New ways of making music mean new ways of learning how to make music.

For the past several years I have been teaching a more physically-oriented approach to Emmett Chapman's two-handed tapping technique. Emmett's parallel hands method is different enough from all other instrumental techniques that I believe an emphasis on how the physical motions of the technique work is the best way for new players to quickly build strong skills. I've also found it helps to develop a thorough understanding of how The Stick resembles and differs from other established instruments, like guitar, keyboards, drums, etc.,

My experience and dialogue with my students has led me to explore how the fingers, hands, arms and whole body are involved in the process of making music in this way. The more I teach this physical approach, the more I realize that playing The Stick is not primarily about where the notes are, but how to get there and how to play them.

I believe that the best way to encourage a common technical foundation for players is to train other teachers in this physical approach, giving them the tools to help beginners get off to the right start. To that end I am beginning a series of seminars that will put interested teachers in the student's place with some additional instruction to make sure they know how I have arrived at my understanding of the physical method.

"For those of us in the Stick community Greg is a major force in forging new territory
with his advanced technique, and with his unique musical vision."
-Tony Levin

Who can attend?
Anyone who wants beginner instruction on the Chapman Stick®, Grand Stick®, Alto™ Stick® or Stick Bass®, even players with some experience who want a fresh take on Emmett Chapman's two-handed tapping method, may attend.

A few instruments will be available for prospective students who do not already own instruments.

Students do not need any knowledge of reading music notation, nor do they need to have any previous experience playing a musical instrument, though some rudimentary knowledge of pitches and rhythms will be helpful.

The seminar will also be a training seminar for experienced players who want to teach my approach to beginner players. Those interested in taking the teacher training course must meet certain experience requirements. To find out more about these requirements, please write to me at stickist@aol.com

The number of places available for students is 10 and for teachers in training is 5. Registrations are on a first-come first-served basis. For information about registration and costs see below.

What about accomodations?
Charlottesville is a small city with lots to do - great for families, as well. There are many hotels in town, but one of my favorites is the English Inn. I've arranged a block rate for the weekend of $83.70 per night double occupancy, which includes a real full breakfast. To make reservations there, call 434-971-9900 and ask for the Stick Seminar rate. This rate is good for Friday, Saturday and or Sunday Nights. our deadline for reserving rooms at this rate is October 10th.

There is no home football game at U. Va. that weekend, so rooms should be available for a while yet. Feel free to shop around. The MRC and Gravity Lounge are both in the downtown area, and any hotel near downtown or the University is not far. Several airlines fly into Charlottesville Airport, including United and northwest. It's also not too far of a drive to fly into Washington Dulles (2 hour drive) or Richmond International Airport (1 1/2 hours)

If you are interested in sharing a ride to Charlottesville or a hotel room once you arte here, let me know and i'll try to hook you up.

Any questions??
Please write to me at stickist@aol.com if you have any questions. I'm very much looking forward to taking this next step in teaching my undrstanding of Emmett's method. It's a powerful way of making music, and I'm glad you'll be there to share this experience with me.

Many thanks to my students, who have inspired much of this teaching, to Emmett and Yuta of Stick enterprises for all of their support of my efforts, and to and Sibley Johns and Vijith Assar of the Music Resource Center for their help in making this happen.

Happy Tapping,
Greg
